COVID-19 crisis in Central America

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

At the present time the world is facing an unprecedented crisis and, as a result, many countries have implemented drastic measures in order to cope with the COVID-19 virus pandemic.

In Central America we have been in lockdown for the last few days with government-imposed curfews and massive shortages in the shops of the most basic supplies.  This is now true for many countries around the world.

However, the families we are working with are particularly vulnerable as most earn their money on a daily basis.  Due to panic buying and the increase in the most staple food supplies we are seeing how the families we support are beginning to struggle.

We would like to offer them something significant that will help over the next two weeks.  Our plan is to offer to nearly 70 families a care package each week until the end of March.  Each package includes the very basic food supplies and will be given to the families we know well and work with.  Every family will have children already in our mentoring programme and we are also exploring ways we can support the children while they are having to spend every day in their little shacks or homes.  It won´t be easy.

We are also coordinating efforts locally to help families and young people living on the streets and working with other local NGOs to provide practical solutions to help them get through this difficult time.

Fortunately the number of people infected with the COVID-19 virus here in Central America is very low and measures by the governments in both Honduras and Guatemala have shown to keep that number low.

These are very difficult times and we will continue to help reaching those living on the streets and children who are at high-risk of taking to the streets.

Thanks for your help and support and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families during this difficult time.
