Another rescue of vulnerable children

ANOTHER RESCUE AND MORE KIDS NOW SAFE!

Thanks to your support we have been able to rescue two boys this week and offer them safe passage to now live with relatives in the Guatemalan countryside.

The rescue was organised by Dunc after one of the boys in the mentoring programme with him disclosed that he and his little brother were being sexually abused by the 13-year-old boy next door.

The boys´mum was desperate to leave the tin shack they were living in and return to her family in the country.  So, we organised for an armed guard and vehicle and collected them and their meagre belongings and drove 3 hours into the countryside and reunited them with their extended family.  They are now very happy and the boys will grow up in a much safer environment.

HELPING SAVE BRAYAN´S SIGHT

While working in one of the slum areas recently, we came across 11-year-old Brayan. He is an at-risk kid and so we started to get to know him and his family. He was extremely affectionate and never asked for anything, but it was clear the was not able to see through his left eye.

After a few trips to the eye foundation here in the city we discovered that we need to get him an urgent operation on his bad eye and provide medication and glasses for the eye he can use.

Brayan was telling Dunc this week that his teachers get frustrated with him (when he could go to school) as he took so long to study. But he can only read one letter at time and so it takes him 5-6 hours a night to do his homework.

Dunc asked Brayan what he likes to do with his free time. He looked into his lap and said he just spends his time trying to read and do his homework as he wants to be able to get a good job one day and support his family.

We are appealing for the £500 needed for his urgent operation this Thursday. If you can share this and help in anyway, Brayan would be so happy. THANK YOU.

Street Kids Direct - News Update March 2020

Dear friends, we are living in unprecedented times and we at Street Kids Direct would like to keep our focus on the most vulnerable children and their families in Guatemala and Honduras.

Just over a week ago Duncan travelled to the UK to spend a month speaking and raising funds for the work here.  However, after just a few days Duncan had to make the decision to return to Guatemala.

It was a race against time as the US were closing the country to all flights from the UK and Guatemala was closing its borders at midnight on Monday. Duncan managed to get one of the last flights back and arrived before borders closed. It was hairy at one moment as immigration officials in Guatemala wanted to send him back to Miami when they discovered he had started his journey in the UK. However, being a resident gave him the opportunity to be allowed into the country, but he now has to remain in quarantine for 7 days.

Guatemala and Honduras are both on lock-down and so freedom of movement is limited and our mentoring centre and mentoring and outreach programmes have had to be closed due to government restrictions.

Those who have access to phones can be in daily contact with us and one thing that is coming through loud and clear is that many will struggle in the coming days as shops have closed, public transport is now not available and almost all of the families we are helping and those on the streets are getting rather desperate.

We would like to arrange a deal with those we know who can sell us food in bulk here and make up care packages for each of the families we work with. Each package will cost £15 or $20 and we aim to provide one package per family for the next two weeks.  If you think you could help, please watch the video below and then click on the donate link at the bottom.

We will be keeping you posted via our website and via social media and appreciate that these are difficult times for us all.
