The Thames Path, a beloved stretch of UK countryside, winds its way for over 185 miles along the River Thames, guiding wanderers through serene water meadows, unspoilt rural villages, and charming historical towns. This picturesque National Trail became the backdrop for a heartfelt fundraising journey in support of Street Kids Direct, initiated in honour of Alexis Curson, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer in November 2018.
In tribute to Alexis, a motivated group of Alexis´s friends and the charity's supporters took their first steps on this meaningful walk on Sunday, October 13th, 2019. Liz, Susie, Ev, Emma (joined by her friend Howard), and Gilly embarked from the Thames Barrier, covering the first 12 miles to Tower Bridge.
Since then, the group has grown, both in size and ambition, as they have continued to trek the entire length of the Thames Path annually. Their dedication and spirit culminated in completing this ambitious challenge on April 14th, 2025. Along the way, they raised an impressive £1,231.00 for Street Kids Direct, leaving a lasting impact in memory of Alexis with vulnerable children.
Alexis was a passionate supporter of Street Kids Direct, driven by a visit she made to Guatemala, where she witnessed firsthand the critical work being done with street-living children and those at high risk of street life. Her commitment didn't end there; Alexis tirelessly raised funds for the charity and generously opened her home to host Radio Christmas every other year since 2008, when it first began broadcasting from a humble “shed” in her garden.
Street Kids Direct extends profound gratitude to everyone who walked the Thames Path and to the exceptionally dedicated team that completed the entire 185-mile journey. We also deeply appreciate all the sponsors and contributors whose efforts help over 600 at-risk children each week in Central America. A heartfelt thank you goes to the anonymous donor who initiated this movement with the first donation of £100 in 2019.
Alexis’s legacy lives on through the Protection Home in Guatemala City, aptly named Casa Alexis by Jess Curson during a visit in April 2019. This refuge provides short-term sanctuary for vulnerable children and families, embodying the love Alexis shared in her own home. We hope that her spirit continues to inspire us all and be replicated in the home in Guatemala.
Thank you all once again for your incredible accomplishments and steadfast support.
