Since January, over half a million Venezuelans have braved the treacherous journey through the Panamanian jungle, an ordeal culminating at the notorious Darién Gap, the dividing line between Central and South America. These courageous individuals have trekked for months, escaping countless hardships in Venezuela. Their reasons for fleeing are as varied as they are heart-wrenching, each story a testament to personal struggle and resilience.
Upon reaching Guatemala, many have grown accustomed to sleeping on the streets and begging for survival. The sight of exhausted, hungry, and traumatised children is a stark reminder of the urgency of their plight. Witnessing this flood of refugees seeking safety and the hope of asylum in the USA, we knew immediate action was necessary.
This week, the SKDGuatemala team has been dedicated to providing sanctuary for families with young children, offering them a glimmer of hope. Thanks to your invaluable support, we have offered safe housing for a week and new shoes for the children, making a tangible difference in their lives during this critical time.
